We’ve spent lots of time discussing the benefits of a limo in New York. Today we decided to address one of the major reasons this factor is true…the traffic. Traffic in New York City has a reputation for a reason. It is well known that the city has some of the worst traffic in the country, and if possible, you should avoid dealing with the city traffic. There are many ways to get around the city without driving, including Taxi Cabs, Buses, and The Metro. By far, you would be better off choosing one of these ways of transportation. If you choose to drive in New York City, here are some pointers that can help greatly.
As a visitor, you are the low man on the totem pole. There is a line of power when it comes to drivers on the street, so you will need to be aware of this. Of course, emergency vehicles like police cars and ambulances get right of way no matter what. After the service vehicles comes taxi drivers, city commuters and then the tourist. And in many ways, the fact that you are a visitor means that locals may become even more aggressive, meaning you will probably have to move out of the way…a lot.
Traffic laws are different in a few ways in New York City. The biggie is the no-right-turn-on-red light law. In most places, it is legal to make a right turn at a red light if there is no traffic. This is not true in New York. And with the inception of traffic cameras, you are sure to end up ticketed if you make an illegal right turn. Second, talking on cell phones while driving in the city is a big no-no. Make sure you remember these two laws, and it may just keep you from getting a citation.
Finally, it is important to understand parking in New York City. Streetside parking is almost impossible. And if you do happen to find a parking spot on the street, there are a couple of things to remember: the alternating side parking rule and parking meters. Many areas in New York City require for vehicles to be alternated one side to the other at different parts of the day. And parking meters need to be paid on time. Parking laws are strictly enforced in the city. There are plenty of parking garages in New York City, but beware: the cost of a parking garage can range from steep to down right pricey. Be prepared to pay a premium for parking in a garage.
If you want to avoid the hassle all together, rent a limousine and travel in luxury and comfort!
